Trump announces $8bn aid package for US farmers hit by diesel price surge

President Donald Trump announced an $8 billion direct aid package for US farmers affected by a sharp rise in diesel fuel costs. He unveiled the Harvest Fuel Relief federal program at a campaign rally in Kansas supporting Republican Senator Roger Marshall, Yahoo Finance reports. According to Trump, the payments are intended to offset a critical increase in farmers’ production costs during the current harvest season.
“When Republicans win, we will pass even more funding for our farmers. We love our farmers,” Trump told supporters. The Wall Street Journal notes that the cash injections are designed to calm discontent among the Republican base ahead of the November midterm elections. In key agricultural states such as Iowa and Kansas, the political fight has intensified as diesel price spikes tied to the protracted conflict with Iran have pushed many farms close to unprofitability.
At the rally, the president also defended deals to import Russian diesel into the United States, calling them the right choice for American consumers. He accused the media of downplaying the scale of allied energy trade with Moscow, saying the European Union had previously paid Russia roughly $250 billion for energy. Separately, on October 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed the start of practical implementation of bilateral arrangements, saying the first tanker carrying 40,000 tons of diesel would set sail for the United States within two to three days.
